It's nearly December and we're fast approaching the new year, it's time to celebrate!

The doors will open at 9pm and the party will last all night long until 3am. Our lovely DJ Sam Du Prez spreads the New Year's party vibe with his eclectic mix of the latest music with the best from the past. With a £10 ticket you will get an indulgent champagne and canape reception on arrival. Or enjoy the night without the nibbles and the fizz, £5 entry tickets are also available.

Food and drink matching competition at Walrus

To prove that the Manchester’s bar and restaurant scene is serious about its food and drink matching we’re going to be hosting a special cold food and drink competition. Whether it’s Gazpacho soup, coconut ice cream or Carpaccio we’re thinking of the summer sun and getting the combinations spot on. So befriend a chef, come down, strut your stuff, show your knowledge and combination skills...

Rules:

• Drink must contain at least 30 ml of any Havana Club product.

• A maximum of two members per team (one bartender, one chef) but single entrants welcome.

• Two serves to be made in a ten minute time limit.

• Food must be cold and mainly

prepared off site (to fit into the ten

minute time period.) Cold storage

also available on site.

• You will be marked on;

o Taste combination.

o Style.

o Knowledge.

o Presentation

Wednesday, 25th of August 2010. 5pm, arrival drinks. 6pm competition starts.

This month sees the build up to the Boutique Bar Show in Manchester’s town hall on Thursday 13^th May. The participating bars have now launched their boutique bar show menus, and this is our contribution here at Walrus. (these cocktails are available all day - everyday here at Walrus)

Cheeky Monkey

Orange and rhubarb under tones with a smoothed grape finish. Lillet, Aperol and Rhum orange. Served straight up in a martini glass. £6.50

Caribbean Manhattan

Sweet and powerful, this little peachy wonder has quite a kick. Chairman’s Reserve Rum, peach and Noilly amber. Stirred and served straight up in a Cancun glass. £6.50

Hard Candy

Tall and refreshing a blend of apples and peach with a sharp lemon twist, Sipsmith Gin, peach, apple and lemon. Served long in a Catalina glass. £6.50

Fiery Haired Assassin

Elderflower, lime and ginger come together in this spicy little number. King’s Ginger liqueur, St Germain elderflower and lime. Short on the rocks. £6.50

Fuzzy Cherry

Cherries, almonds and vanilla high notes combine wonderfully in this fizzy beauty. Serves XO Cognac Liqueur, Champagne and Cherry Heering. Elegantly served in a Champagne flute. £6.50

Hungry Pigeon: The Northern Quarter Festival May 22nd - 25th 09

Drop down into the basement of Walrus over the bank holiday weekend (Saturday 23rd May and Sunday 24th May) and discover a photographic exploration of the northern quarter by Chloe McCarrick and Nick Froud.

An exhibition of pinhole and experimental photography created using an eclectic mix of handmade and vintage cameras. Accompanied by a series of music and soundscapes by Nick Froud contructed from samples gathered at the locations of the photos.

A free exhibition at Walrus as part of the Manchester City Council funded HUNGRY PIGEON Northern Quarter Festival of arts & music.

Wednesday 25th March saw Walrus host its first ever fashion show. Organised by students at Manchester Met university the event was a real success.

Local models worked the catwalk, showcasing the Spring Summer 09 designs of local up-and-coming fashion designers; Lucy Margaret Howarth, Laura Ruxton, Francesca Giomarelli and Leanne Hughes.

All monies raised went toward Manchester-based charity 'Medical Foundation'. Lucky guests went home with some fabulous prizes from the likes of Junk and Rags to Bitches; local northern quarter boutiques.

Next Wednesday sees Walrus host a charity fashion event in partnership with students of Manchester Met University. The soiree begins with a fashion show displaying the designs of Lianne Hughes, post-graduate Fashion Design student and Laura Ruxton, an undergraduate studying Fashion design - both at Manchester Met University.

To compliment the fashion, you will be treated to our delicious canapes, alongside a wonderful array of raffle prizes up for grabs! Prizes feature goodies from the likes of Monsoon and Rags to Bitches, to treats from Hotel Chocolat and cinema tickets. And, if you aren't lucky enough to win a prize, you can alway treat yourself to a cupcake!

DJ Jupiter Rooms will be keeping the party alive with electro-disco-80s tunes.

Thursday 29th January ’09 saw Walrus Canteen and Bar (in Manchester’s Northern Quarter) celebrating its first birthday!

A sushi chef was appointed specifically for the occasion offering a beautiful array of sushi, amongst other tasty treats taken from the Walrus Canteen menu such as ‘Three Flavour Fish’, with tamarind, palm sugar, and red chilli served on authentic bamboo and banana leaf platters.

Bar tenders handed out complimentary mini cocktail shots at the bar, whilst beautifully decorated cupcakes made a welcome appearance marking the celebration in fitting style.

Walrus is a relaxed lounge and modern Asian eatery, and after a wonderful first year, remains dedicated to bringing unrivalled quality and service to Manchester's discerning bar crowd.

New Cross Art Exhibition

Wednesday 9th July 08 : Walrus plays host to a Northern Quarter community art exhibition.

Local resident Martin Shaw had challenged himself not only to find a group of unknown artists, but a venue to display their work, to generate media attention and invite all the local curators from Manchester’s main art galleries.....all within 50 days.

By the evening of 9th July, what had begun as an idea and a facebook group had generated into an evening of art, canapés and live music at Walrus.

The ethos running behind the whole idea really created a strong community spirit with lots of people getting involved. Local art materials shops - Fred Aldous and The Art Shop very kindly loaned us several easels to display the art.

The evening was a huge success – we had over 10 (mainly local) artists, several art curators, the Manchester Evening News and BBC North West Tonight filming.

Co-op - the ethical bank also very generously bought a round of drinks for everyone...

Exhibitors included Tak Qui, Tim Barnes, Robert Billington, Ben Willaims Fahey, Ben Topliss, Marc Seddon, Gareth Cash, Sheryl Walton.

There were however others who took part at the last minute - including a Manchester-based Italian street artist who was really made-up to have his work - a rolled up painted cloth of the Cistine Chapel in Rome displayed in Walrus bar!

One of the highlights of the evening was the amazing live art creation of Sketch City, who painted directly onto the glass curved panel at Walrus ....

Carrying a baby Walrus, we love our Manga girl - thanks Sketch City and to everyone else who made the event such a success...

Advertising agency TBWA hosted their post- Christmas and New Year party – RETOX at Walrus. Organiser, Liz Dewhurst explained 'we didn't have a Christmas party, then, before we knew it January and February had gone, so we decide 'Retox' would be the perfect theme for a March post Xmas and New Year 'detox' party!'

The evening went down a treat with Jazz music, break dancers, a special TBWA cocktail menu and canapés.

Walrus Canteen and Bar opened its doors to Manchester's great and good. After months of hard work, the wait was finally open and our opening night was a huge success!

Guests gathered to sample a taste of Walrus, including some of the brilliant people who had contributed to its success: interior designer Bernard Carroll, Dinosaur the creative agency behind Walrus' quirky branding and identity, amongst many many others.

Guests enjoyed the wonderful selection of fresh fruit cocktails and sampled an array of south-East Asian delights served on bamboo and banana leaf trays
